1975 BYU Hall of Fame
Budd Shields, born in 1907 in Stockton, Utah, began his swimming career at Provo High School and continued his success when he joined the Brigham Young University swim team. Undefeated in high school, he held Intermountain and high school records in the 40, 220, and 440 freestyle events and in the 100-yard breaststroke.
In both the 1928 and 1929 NCAA competitions he was high-point man and an All-American selection. In the 1928 NCAA meet he set meet records in the 440 freestyle and 220 freestyle. In 1929 he returned to better his own marks in both events, cutting eleven seconds off his record in the 440.
In 1930 Budd was invited by the AAU to join four other noted swimmers in a tour around the world. He later joined the Los Angeles Athletic Club, swimming with such teammates as Buster Crabbie and Dutch Smith.
After retiring from competitive swimming, Budd worked for Provo City Power for many years. In 1971 he was selected to the Utah Sports Hall of Fame.
Budd married Eloyse Ellen Stanton in 1933, and they are the parents of four children - two sons and two daughters.
