PROVO, Utah – BYU track and field hits the road again this Friday and Saturday for its second meet of the outdoor season at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego.

“San Diego will be a nice meet coming on the heels of the USC meet,” BYU track and field head coach Ed Eyestone said. “I was really happy with the way the team came out with seven regional qualifiers in the first outdoor meet last weekend. I think this will be another opportunity for some of the athletes who were really close last week to hopefully get their qualifying marks this week.”

On the men’s side, those Eyestone says he expects to achieve results that would qualify themselves for regionals include "Tomi" Babatomiwa Adegoke (long jump), Craig Merkley (discus), Zachary Blackham (high jump), John Glazier (long jump), Jake Jarvis (pole vault), Jameson Shirley (pole vault) and Tatenda Tsumba (200 meters). In order to qualify for regional competition, athletes must own marks/times that rank inside the top-48 in the West Region in their respective events.

For the women’s squad, Eyestone says he believes Anginae Monteverde (pole vault), Nicole Naatjes (pole vault), Andrea Stapleton (high jump), Kassie Nagel (throws) and Madison Pachner (throws) are all capable of getting the marks needed for regional qualification at this weekend's meet.

“You can usually depend on good competition and conditions in San Diego,” Eyestone said. “I think all of those student-athletes will have a great chance.”

In the preseason outdoor rankings released earlier this week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the BYU men's team was ranked No. 20 in the country while the women's team sits at No. 40.

Final results from the Aztec Invitational can be accessed on the BYU men’s track and field schedule page, or at goaztecs.com.
