Sacramento, Calif. -- BYU junior Chase Dalton captured a first-place finish in the decathlon Friday at the Sacramento State Mondo Mid-Major Invitational.

After a strong showing on the first day of the decathlon, both Dalton and fellow Cougar Joshua Weirich struggled on Friday. Dalton was still able to win the event with a score of 7,215 and Weirich finished in seventh place, scoring a total of 5,143.

“It’s great that Dalton finished first, but we didn’t perform quite as well as we’d hoped,” head coach Mark Robison said. “Especially after starting out so well yesterday and even in the first event today. We’ll do another decathlon in a couple weeks, though, and hopefully we’ll be able to get these guys qualified for regionals.”

Weirich finished in second in the 110-meter hurdles to start the day while Dalton finished in 15.61, taking the fourth spot.

In the discus throw, Dalton came in first with a mark of 122-05.00. Weirich failed to score after throwing foul on each of his three throws.

Dalton tied for first place in the pole vault competition, registering a mark of 14-07.25. On Weirich’s third vault, he cleared the standard but failed to push the pole away, letting the standard fall and finishing without registering a height.

In the javelin throw, Dalton and Weirich placed first and second, respectively. Dalton threw a distance of 185-00.00 and Weirich threw 167-05.00.

To round out the decathlon, Dalton took fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:45.45. Weirich did not finish the race.

Also in competition at the Invitational, Dylan Shawhan took third place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:39 in his first race of the year. Aaron Fletcher rolled his ankle in the water pit during the 3,000-meter steeplechase and didn’t finish.

Winston Wilkinson took first in the discus throw with a mark of 168-01.00. With his best throw of the season, Aaron Clark took eighth place, throwing 158-01.00. Jacob Foutz took the 11th spot with a mark of 154-11.00.

In the long jump, John Glazier took first overall with a jump of 23-04.75. Scott Matheson grabbed third place with his jump of 23-03.25 and Jonathan Ferguson took eighth by jumping 21-11.00.

Sam Rockwood won the high jump event, clearing a height of 6-09.00. Dakoda John, who was battling an illness, didn’t jump.

The Sacramento State Mondo Mid-Major Invitational will continue Saturday morning, starting with the hammer throw at 10:15 a.m. PDT.
