Cougar Men in First, Women Third After First Day of Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (February 24) - The men's and women's pentathlon kicked off the inaugural Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the Air Force cademy. Colorado State's Doug Crumb and San Diego State's Aja Frary captured the men's and men's titles, respectively.

In the men's competition, Crumb captured first place with a total of 3,884 points, followed by BYU's Kyle Grossarth (3,729), Hyrum Prince (3,694) and Chris Kemp (3,606). Crumb collected first place in the high jump with a mark of 6' 8.75". He captured a pair of second-place finishes in the long jump and shot put with distances of 22' 8" and 41' 0.50", respectively. Grossarth earned a pair of first-place finishes in the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.31 and in the long jump with a distance of 22' 10.50". Prince won the shot put event with a mark of 46' 8.25", while Kemp led the field in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:42.00.

On the women's side, Frary finished in first place with a total of 3,902 points, 199 more than second-place finisher Heather Steadham of UNLV (3,703). BYU's Anna-Lee Walcott ended up in third at 3,610, followed by UNLV's Chantel Yates (3,610) and Utah's Erianne Allen (3,533). Frary collected a trio of first-place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.67, in the high jump with a height of 5' 8" and in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.12. Walcott finished first in the long jump with a distance of 18' 9.75", while Allen earned first in the shot put with a mark of 39' 3".

After the first day of competition, the BYU men lead the team competition with 19 points, followed by Colorado State (11), Air Force (7) and Wyoming (2). UNLV leads the way for the women with 13.5 points, followed by San Diego State (11), BYU (7.5), Utah (4) and Colorado State (3).

The championships continue tomorrow and run through Saturday.
