BYU sets school record in 4x100-meter relay at Desert Heat Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. — BYU track and field wrapped up a successful weekend of competition at the Desert Heat Classic on Saturday, notching a school record, the third of the weekend, and a top-10 mark at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.

Women’s Recap
Adaobi Tabugbo, Taye Raymond, Dolita Awala-Shaw and Annalise Hart clocked a 44.68 in the 4x100-meter relay to finish third, breaking a school record of 44.88, set in 2010.

In the javelin throw, Jessica Thompson’s personal best mark of 49.71 meters/163-1 was good for fourth place. It also entered her into the top-10 ranks, putting the sophomore at No. 6 all-time.

The Cougars also set seven other personal bests on the day: Hart (54.72) and Brilee Pontius (55.04) in the 400-meters, Awala-Shaw (12.04), Emma Johnson (12.15) and Lauryn Ford (12.56) in the 100-meters, Kate Thomas (1:00.59) in the 400-meter hurdles, and Awala-Shaw (24.27) and Pontius (24.51) in the 200-meters.

BYU men’s track and field athletes posted nine personal records and one event win in Tucson on Saturday.

Colten Yardley improved his 400m hurdle time to 49.83, taking first in the event over Will Mundy of No. 5 Oregon and Jamar Marshall Jr. of No. 17 Arizona State.

Yardley’s new personal-best came just 0.02 seconds from surpassing his sprints and hurdles coach, Kyle Grossarth, for No. 4 all-time at BYU.

Freshman Spencer Carlile also clocked a personal-best time in the 400m hurdle at 52.49 to finish ninth.

Yardley combined with Jared Davis, Dallin Draper and Landon Maxfield to finish second in the men’s 4x100m relay. At 39.41, the Cougars beat the Sun Devils, but came in just 0.29 seconds behind the top-5 ranked Ducks.

Trey Jackson, Joshua Taylor and Eli Hazlett each recorded personal-bests and top-10 finishes in the 400m. Jackson finished fourth at 46.65, only 0.37 seconds short of the program’s top-10 board. Taylor slipped past host Arizona’s Carl Hicks by 0.23 seconds to take eighth. Hazlett’s personal-best came at 47.32.

Taylor, Hazlett, Jackson and Jensen took second in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:08.52, in front of Arizona and just behind Arizona State. 

Thrower Danny Bryant set personal-bests in the shot put and hammer throw, finishing fifth and ninth, respectively. Bryant held-off Arizona’s Zach Landa for a top-5 shot put finish with a mark of 18.32m/60-1.25. The freshman from Valencia, California coupled that mark with a hammer throw of 54.35m/178-3.

BYU athletes will compete at the Oregon Twilight meet at Hayward Field in a preview of the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Friday, May 6.
