PROVO, Utah – Fan Fan Charles highlighted Day 2 of the BYU Invitational with a second-place finish and a new personal record in the 60-meter final with a time of 6.75 seconds.

Utah Valley University’s Allah Laryea-Akrong and Nicholas Taylor finished first and third with times of 6.69 and 6.78, respectively.

“The way Fan Fan [Charles] ran today was phenomenal,” head coach Mark Robison said. “We haven’t had a 60m time like that in a long time. We were also able to make it through without any serious injuries, which is good. I’m pleased how things went, and we will see a lot of improvement between this and our next meet.”

In the men’s heptathlon, BYU’s Chase Dalton and Isaac Robison finished first and second overall with scores of 4,831 and 4,686 points, respectively. At the end of day one, Dalton and Robison finished in third and fourth place, respectively, trailing teammate Joshua Weirich. Weirich did not finish the rest of the events during day two.

In the mile, BYU runners Tommy Gruenewald (4:10.90), Jason Witt (4:14.52), Jared Rohatinsky (4:15.99) and Steve Flint (4:15.99) claimed the top four spots followed by UVU’s Cliff Nielson (4:16.15) who finished fifth. Nielson jumped out early and maintained the lead for most of the race but was overtaken by Gruenewald at the beginning of the last lap. Witt, Rohatinsky and Flint also passed Nielson in the last 100 meters.

The high jump consisted of three BYU jumpers, Dakoda John, Sam Rockwood and Russell Nielson, and one jumper from UVU, Ty Rosser. John finished in first place with a leap of 2.10m. Teammates Rockwood and Nielson finished second and third with jumps of 2.05m and 2.00m. Rosser dropped out after the first round.

BYU’s Jared Ward and Tylor Thatcher dominated the men’s 3,000m final finishing first and second with times of 8:22.87 and 8:23.20, respectively. The Cougars’ Daniel Carney, Dylan Shawhan and Conner Peloquin finished third, fourth and fifth claiming the top-five spots.
