Batty Named Academic All-America of the Year

TOWSON, Md. – Junior Miles Batty of nationally-ranked Brigham Young University and senior Bobby Torphy of Muhlenberg College headline the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). 

Batty and Torphy have been chosen as the winners of the Academic All-America of the Year award in the University and College Divisions, respectively. 

A neuroscience and exercise science major with a 3.95 G.P.A., Batty was the NCAA Division I champion in the indoor mile. A member of the NCAA champion indoor distance medley relay team, he helped BYU finish third at the NCAA indoor championship meet. Honored as the NCAA Indoor Athlete of the Year, he was the Mountain West Conference champion in the indoor mile and the distance medley relay team. Also named Mountain West Indoor Track Male Athlete of the Year, 

During the outdoor season, Batty set the Mt. SAC record in the 1500-meter with a time of 3:36.25. He won the MWC title in the 1500-meters and finished seventh in the NCAA Outdoor Championships to earn All-America honors. 

The Mountain West individual cross country champion, he also was honored as the Mountain West Cross Country Male Athlete of the Year. A three-time choice as the MWC Runner of the Week, the Sandy, Utah native ran second at the NCAA Mountain Regional Meet. At the NCAA Championship Meet, he finished 15th. 

A biochemistry major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Torphy received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was a two-time NCAA Elite 88 Award winner for Muhlenberg College. A two-time NCAA qualifier in both cross country and track, the native of Schnecksville, Pa. earned Division III All-America honors on the Mules’ fourth place Distance Medley Relay team. He was a two-time all-region performer in cross country. 

A 15-time Centennial Conference track & field medalist who earned four gold medals, Torphy set the school indoor 800-meters record and was a member of the record-breaking mile, 4x800 and Distance Medley relay teams. The Muhlenberg College Class of 2011 Valedictorian, he served a Cardiothoracic surgery internship and was a volunteer at the Lehigh Valley Hospital. He will attend medical school at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
