AUSTIN -- BYU’s 800 meter dominance continued and Mindy McClurkin displayed her all-around abilities on day two of the NCAA West Preliminary. With four members of the team earning qualifying marks, five Cougars have earned spots in six events at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 9-12.

“We had some good things happen today,” BYU head women’s coach Craig Poole said. “Mindy had a great day and so did our 800 meter runners. They all ran great races and three were able to advance. All in all it was a good day and we have several opportunities tomorrow to have athletes qualify for nationals.”

Nachelle Stewart was the top finisher in the 800 meters and Lacey Cramer and Angela Wagner joined her in the top 12 to qualify for nationals. Stewart registered at time of 2:04.26 while Cramer came in at 2:05.32 and Wagner at 2:05.52.

Mindy McClurkin earned a spot in the quarterfinals of the 200 meters. The race will be held Saturday with a trip to nationals on the line. McClurkin displayed her versatility by taking second in the long jump with a leap of 6.54 meters (21-05.50) to qualify for nationals.

Cougars competing on Saturday include Madara Dzalbe in the triple jump, Tipaleli Fotu in the hammer throw, Ada Robinson, Ashley Dziendziel and Diana Blauer in the high jump, the 4x100 meter relay team, McClurkin in the 200 meter quarterfinals and Nicole Nielsen in the 5000 meters.
