PROVO -- Brett Birkeland and John Reilly began the Clarence Robison Invitational for BYU in the decathlon Wednesday and Thursday.

Birkeland earned 6,194 total points to take fourth place, capitalizing on a first-place finish in the javelin and a second-place finish in the long jump. The sophomore threw the javelin 48.69 meters while jumping 6.55 meters.

Birkeland's point total is good for fifth in the Mountain West Conference.

"It was okay for Brett," said BYU head coach Mark Robison. "Finals took a toll on the guys. We just need some time now to get him going and he'll be ready to roll."

John Reilly also racked up 5,633 points for the Cougars to finish seventh overall. Reilly's performance was highlighted by third place in the shot put and fourth in both the pole vault and long jump portions. The junior's mark is currently seventh in the MWC.

Utah State's Philip Noble finished first in the decathlon with 6,538 points.

The Robison Invitational continues on Friday with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and running events beginning at 1 p.m. at the Robison track and field complex. Live results can be found at runnercard.com.
