COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – BYU junior Leif Arrhenius and senior Mindy McClurkin have been selected as the Mountain West Conference Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively.

Arrhenius won both the men’s weight throw and shot put events at the 2010 BYU Indoor Invitational on Jan. 8. The Orem, Utah, native and an All-American in the weight throw last season, set a provisional-qualifying mark in the weight throw with a toss of 65’-7.50” (20.00m). The mark tied the meet record, is tops in the league so far this season and ranks second in the NCAA, according to TFRRS.org. Arrhenius went on to gather first-place honors in the shot put with a distance of 58’-0.25” (17.68m), which is the best throw in the Conference this season and seventh-best in the nation, according to TFRRS.org.

Also competing at the BYU Indoor Invitational, McClurkin won the women’s 60-meter dash and long jump events. Hailing from Santa Barbara, Calif., McClurkin crossed the finish line first in the 60-meter dash in a personal-best and MWC-leading time of 7.53 seconds. Her performance is currently tied for 12th in the nation, according to TFRRS.org. McClurkin followed that performance by provisionally-qualifying for the NCAA championships in the long jump with a leap of 20’-5.75” (6.24m). Her mark tops the MWC list this season and is the second-best in the country, according to TFRRS.org.

This marks Arrhenius’ second weekly honor of his career and McClurkin’s first.
