More Regional Qualifiers on Day Two

WALNUT -- Proving once again that they can compete against any one in the country, the BYU women’s track team finished with several regional qualifying marks at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., on Friday.

Freshman Katy Andrews started the Cougars off with a first-place finish in the 5,000-meter open event. Andrews’ NCAA Regional qualifying time of 16:46.90 is the second best in the Mountain Conference Standings and nearly a minute faster than her previous best time.

“This has been an excellent meet,” said Patrick Shane, BYU women’s distance coach. “We have performed really well against great competition.”

Former Olympian turned BYU sensation, Izle Gribule had another NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the javelin throw (145-09.00). And freshman, Sarah Edwards also qualified regionally in the 1,500-meter open event, taking fourth with a time of 4:26.04.

Another impressive freshman performance came from Sarah Yingling, who finished with a personal record in the 1,500-meter event. Her time of 4:33.14 ranks seventh in the MWC standings.
