Lohmeier El-Bakri, McWhorter & Shurts highlight BYU success at Mt. SAC, Beach

PROVO, Utah — Performances by Sable Lohmeier El-Bakri and Zach McWhorter highlighted BYU track and field’s weekend at the 62nd Annual Mt. SAC Relays and Beach Invitational on Saturday.

Men's Recap

Zach McWhorter cleared 5.70m/18-8.25 as he tied his tied his own school record in the men's pole vault Elite Invite at the Mt. SAC Relays. McWhorter was one of only three collegians competing among a flight which included athletes from around the world. Despite taking fourth in the flight, McWhorter finished in front of Princeton's Simen Guttormsen (5.50m/18-0.5). Clayton Fritsch of Sam Houston State won at 5.80m/19-0.25. 

Dallin Shurts finished off the weekend with a bang as he took first in the men's discus throw at the Beach Invitational. Shurts' mark of 59.47m/195-1 gave him the win over throwers from No. 8 Stanford, No. 18 Iowa and host Long Beach State. 

Danny Bryant took ninth in the men's shot put in Long Beach at 17.23m/56-6.5. 

Women’s Recap
Sable Lohmeier El-Bakri finished third in the discus throw, tossing a 55.51m/182-1 personal best that moved her from No. 4 up to No. 2 all-time at BYU.

Leah Thompson joined Lohmeier El-Bakri in the top-10 of the event, placing sixth and also setting a new personal best with a mark of 53.10m/174-2. Both throwers' marks puts them in national qualifying position.

Gretchen Hoekstre (15.96m/52-4.5) and Sierra Freeland (15.30m/50-2.5) placed fourth and sixth, respectfully, in the shot put to close out the weekend.

The Cougars return to Provo to host their first of two home meets at Clarence F. Robinson Track & Field next week. The first meet is scheduled to run Wednesday through Saturday, April 20-23.
