BYU Track & Field Heads North for Nike Boise Indoor Invite
PROVO, Utah — BYU track & field heads to Idaho to compete in the Nike Boise Indoor Invitational on Friday.
The Cougars will compete against a field of Boise State, Central Washington, Northwest University, Pepperdine, San Francisco State and Utah State, among others.
“Three of our event groups will be going,” BYU head coach Ed Eyestone said. “We’ll have our multi-event group, pole vaulters and we have coach Perkins and coach Grossarth taking their groups as well. It will be a great opportunity for those groups to get another meet in before we head to Texas next week.”
Multiple Cougars are ranked in the top 30 in the country that will be competing this weekend. Pole vaulters Zach McWhorter (5.61m) and Raul Rios (5.27m) are currently No. 4 and No. 27 in the nation, respectively. Brian Matthews (5,581 points) is No. 12 and Caleb Witsken (5,183) is No. 38 in the heptathlon and Cierra Tidwell (1.76m) is No. 32 in women’s high jump.
McWhorter, a freshman, is second on the BYU all-time pole vault list and is only 10 centimeters from breaking the school record. Matthews is fourth in the indoor heptathlon in Cougar history.
Eyestone is looking forward to see how McWhorter performs. “He’s been trying some new techniques, different grips on the pole to see if it makes a difference. We’re excited to see how it turns out this weekend.”
The coach is confident that each Cougar will be able to make an impact this weekend. "We've been seeing excellent effort in practice the last couple weeks. Our coaches are doing a great job to get our athletes ready. I think we're going to have a good showing in Boise."
