Owens named CoSIDA Academic All-American
PROVO, Utah – BYU sophomore steeplechaser Matt Owens was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Third Team on Thursday.
Owens was named a first-team All-American in the 3000m steeplechase for the second season in a row after taking eighth place at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The sophomore also ran the third-fastest steeplechase time in school history this past season (8:32.59).
With a GPA of 3.96, the exercise science major advanced to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team ballot after being selected to the All-District First Team for District 8. The ballot included 87 total nominees that advanced from the eight NCAA Division I districts.
Owens marks the first CoSIDA Academic All-American from the BYU men’s track and field and cross country program since Miles Batty received the award in both 2011 and 2012.
