Cougars set personal records at home meet
PROVO, Utah — The No. 17 BYU men’s track and field team took advantage of good weather and a home meet on Friday, racking up personal records and regional qualifying marks in the process.
“We had a very good day with some great times from a lot of our guys,” head coach Mark Robison said. “A lot of guys advanced to the finals and that just gives them another chance to improve their times. We’ll hope to do even better tomorrow.”
In the 400-meter dash trials, Cade Lindahl took first with a time of 46.58, his best mark of the year in that event. Mario Harper took fourth with a lifetime-best mark of 48.00. Senior Rhyan Atrice took fifth in 48.03 and advanced into Saturday’s finals along with Lindahl and Harper. Two other Cougars, John Lamont and Tyrell Yardley, took 12th and 16th place, respectively, finishing in 49.19 and 50.73.
Bejon Bryant came in second place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.11 and will move on to the finals on Saturday.
Fan Fan Charles won the men’s 100-meter dash trials, finishing in 10.70. Jason Hinds crossed the finish line in 10.86 seconds and will move on to Saturday’s final along with Charles. Freshman Jacob Arslanian also ran in the event and came in 12th place with a time of 11.06.
Cougar freshman Korey Smith took second in the 400-meter hurdle trials in 52.56, which was a career-best mark for him. He will advance to the finals with Bryant, who took sixth in 55.13.
Lindahl won the 200-meter dash in 21.24, a personal record, and will compete in the finals on Saturday along with Hinds, who finished in ninth place with a time of 21.57. Arslanian just missed the cut, finishing in 10th place with a time of 21.63. Lamont (22.58), Bryant (23.11) and Charles (25.28) also raced, finishing in 20th, 23rd and 26th, respectively.
In the men’s 5,000-meter run final, Conner Peloquin came in first place with a time of 14:46.94. Sophomore Dylan Shawhan finished in third place with a time of 15:11.76.
Dennis Christensen was the only Cougar to compete in the shot put and won the competition with a personal-best mark of 55-08.50.
In the long jump finals, John Glazier and Scott Matheson took second and third place, respectively, with marks of 24-03.75 and 23-04.25. Glazier’s mark was a personal record. Sophomore Jonathan Ferguson took seventh place with a jump of 21-07.50.
Keith Keller and Kyle Baker finished with the top two marks in the javelin finals. Keller topped all marks with a distance of 214-09.25, which he threw on his first attempt. Baker’s fourth attempt went 196-06.25 and earned him the second-place finish.
