Rogers Named a Breakout Player for 2011-12
PROVO, Utah – Junior Stephen Rogers has been named a Breakout Frontcourt Player for 2011-12 by Steve Megargee of Rivals.com.
Rogers is entering his second season with the Cougars after helping BYU to a 32-5 record and a trip to the Sweet 16 as a sophomore in 2010-11. The Mesa Community College transfer averaged 4.1 points and 2.2 rebounds while shooting .344 from three and .854 from the free throw line.
In his only season at Mesa in 2008-09, Rogers earned NJCAA All-America status while averaging 21.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals. The 6-foot-8 forward hit 85 threes and shot .499 from the field, .427 from three and .810 from the free throw line.
Here is what Megargee had to say in his story on Rivals.com:
"BYU F Stephen Rogers: Somebody has to put points on the board for the Cougars now that Jimmer Fredette has moved on to the NBA. The Cougars also must replace Jackson Emery, their second-leading scorer from last season. Rogers doesn't play the same position as either of those guys, but he can offer plenty of scoring. The 6-8 forward was an outstanding offensive player at Mesa (Ariz.) Community College before transferring to BYU, where he averaged 4.1 points, 2.2 rebounds and 10.2 minutes last season. Rogers, who began his college career at Arizona State, averaged 21.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals in his lone season at Mesa. He also made 85 3-pointers and shot 42.7 percent from beyond the arc that season."
