PROVO -- SI.com named BYU senior guard Jimmer Fredette its national player of the year and a first-team All-American on Wednesday. The SI.com honors come a day after the Glens Falls, N.Y., native was named player of the year and an All-American by CBSSports.com and Pat Forde of ESPN.com’s Forde Minutes.

Fredette leads the nation in scoring at 27.9 points per game and adds 4.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He led the Cougars to a 28-3 record in the regular season, a share of the Mountain West Conference regular season title at 14-2 and a top 10 ranking for the past eight weeks.

Entering the MWC Tournament, Fredette is second on BYU’s all-time scoring list, 73 points from passing Danny Ainge. He is also three points from breaking Devin Durrant’s single season scoring record of 866 points.

Yahoo! Sports and FoxSports.com have also named Fredette an All-American. On Monday, Fredette was named the MWC Player of the Year and to the All-MWC First Team.

The Cougars open the Conoco MWC Tournament on Thursday as the top seed against Wyoming or TCU. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT and will be televised live on The Mtn. Fans can also listen live on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM and 1160 AM or online at KSL.com.
