Traore, Stewart earn WCC All-Academic accolades
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – BYU sophomores Fousseyni Traore and Trey Stewart were honored for their work on and off the court on Tuesday morning when the West Coast Conference released its 2023 All-Academic honors.
Traore was one of 10 student-athletes named to the all-academic team as the sophomore picks up league academic honors for the first time. The Bamako, Mali native has a 3.68 GPA with a business major while leading the Cougars in scoring and rebounding this season.
In his two seasons in Provo, Traore has appeared in 63 games including 51 starts where he is averaging 11.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Eight of his 17 career double-doubles have come this season including a 17-point, 14 rebound performance last Saturday in BYU’s win over San Francisco.
As the Cougars head into the postseason, Traore is averaging a team-high 13.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game and is on pace to become just the second player in program history to shoot over 60.0 percent from the field (min. 100 FG made) in a single season. The 6-foot-6 forward is shooting 60.4 percent from the field, which is the 22nd highest mark in NCAA Division I men’s basketball.
Stewart picked up honorable mention consideration as the American Fork native holds a 3.44 GPA in psychology. During his two seasons as a Cougar, Stewart has appeared in 35 games including 24 appearances this season.
The 6-foot-2 guard is part of a Cougars second unit that ranks second in the WCC and 30th in the nation in bench points per game. The sophomore ranks ninth in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio and scored a career-high nine points on 4-of-6 shooting against Santa Clara earlier this month.
