Fredette Earns MWC Player of the Week Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – BYU senior Jimmer Fredette and UNLV junior Chace Stanback have been named the Mountain West Conference Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week for games through November 28. This is the eighth career weekly accolade for Fredette and first for Stanback.

A 6-3 guard, Fredette was named Tournament Most Valuable Player after leading the 23-ranked Cougars to a perfect 3-0 record and the championship at the South Padre Island (Texas) Invitational last week. The Glens Falls, N.Y., native opened the week with 16 points, six assists and one steal in an 86-36 rout of Mississippi Valley State. Fredette followed that performance with a season-high 32 points and a career-tying five steals, as well as four assists, three rebounds and one blocked shot in a 77-75 double-overtime win against South Florida. In the second overtime vs. the Bulls, he hit a 3-pointer to give BYU a 75-72 lead with 1:32 remaining, and then with the score tied at 75, passed the ball to Noah Hartsock for the game-winning shot with one se cond left on the clock. In Saturday’s 74-70 championship victory against Saint Mary’s, Fredette tallied 24 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals. He made two free throws with 32 seconds remaining to give the Cougars a 69-66 lead. Then with BYU trailing, 70-69, Fredette hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in the game to give the Cougars a 72-70 advantage. For the week, Fredette averaged 24.0 points, 4.7 assists, 3.0 steals and 3.0 rebounds per game while shooting 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field and 91.7 percent (11-of-12) from the foul line.

A 6-8 guard/forward, Stanback received Tournament MVP honors after guiding the Runnin’ Rebels to a n unblemished 3-0 record and the title at the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif., over the weekend. The Los Angeles, Calif., product opened tournament play with 15 points on 6-of-7 field shooting in an 80-71 win over Tulsa. Stanback also had three rebounds and two assists against the Golden Hurricane. He followed that effort with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, in the Rebels’ 69-55 triumph over Murray State, adding two rebounds and two assists. Stanback closed out the week with a game-high tying 17 points, eight rebounds, one assist and one steal in Sunday’s 71-59 championship win over Virginia Tech. For the week, Stanback averaged 17.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 70 percent (21-of-30) from the field, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, and 80 percent from the free throw line (4-of-5).
