PROVO -- BYU men’s basketball coach Dave Rose announced Friday that Stephen Rogers, a 6-foot-8 forward from Mesa, Ariz., has signed a national letter of intent to join the Cougars for the 2010-11 season. He will have three years to play three seasons at BYU.

“We’re really excited to have Stephen in our program,” Rose said. “He had a great freshman season at Mesa Community College and brings a great deal of versatility to our roster. He’s a great three-point shooter with great size. He rebounds well and will play multiple positions for us. Stephen’s a proven winner, having won two state titles in high school and a region title at Mesa. Our staff is really pleased that he chose BYU.”

Rogers joins the Cougars after an All-America freshman season at Mesa Community College. He led Mesa to a 25-7 record and the NJCAA Region I Championship while averaging 21.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals. Rogers hit 85 threes and posted impressive shooting percentages, hitting 49.9 percent from the field, 81.0 percent on free throws and 42.7 percent from three.

Prior to enrolling at Mesa, Rogers redshirted one season at Arizona State. He prepped at Mountain View High School in Mesa, Ariz., where he was a three-year letterman. As a senior, Rogers averaged 15.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and shot 86 percent from the free throw line. His team was 61-4 his junior and senior seasons and he led Mountain View to state titles in 2005 and 2006. Rogers earned all-state honors from the Arizona Coaches Association and Varsity.com.

Rogers served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cleveland, Ohio, prior to enrolling at Arizona State. He is the son of Kimball and Sharon Rogers and the youngest of seven children. His sister Lindsay played volleyball for Arizona and his uncle Brent Stephenson played basketball for BYU where he earned WAC Student-Athlete of the Year honors.
