Player Notes

— After missing the Cougar Tipoff with an ankle injury, freshman Tyler Haws made the first shot of his BYU career, a runner along the baseline 5:30 into the game. Junior Logan Magnusson also made his first basket on his first shot as a Cougar, converting a fast-break layup at the 11:42 mark in the first half.

— Jimmer Fredette scored 22 points to go with six rebounds, four steals, four assists and four turnovers.

Team Notes

— BYU’s 18-point margin of victory was the smallest in Cougar exhibition play since a 14-point win against Seattle Pacific, 86-72 on November 10, 2005.

— BYU newcomers (Haws, Davies and Magnusson) combined for ten points in the first half and 14 points overall.

- Excluding the stats of Trinity Western’s Jacob Doerksen, the BYU defense held the Spartans to 29.4% (10-for-34) from the field for a team total of 28 points.

“I was really pleased with this game. I was really impressed with Trinity Western. They came out physical and strong. They were well coached, and made us work on every possession offensively and defensively. That’s what you want out of an exhibition game.”

“We need to guard a little bit better. We missed a lot of easy shots early on, but I think that had a lot to do with the nerves and excitement of the first game. We settled down and did a pretty good job offensively.”

“I want this team to develop its own personality. Jonathan and Jimmer will be a big part of that offensively and we hope other guys will become a big part of the offense as well. We need to be able to start more quickly but I was pleased with how we recovered.”
