Player Notes
Haws finished with 26 points, 2 rebounds, a steal and an assist. His first two 3-pointers helped him pass the 2,000-point milestone. He is the fifth Cougar to do so and is the third fastest accomplishing the feat. Haws (108 games) reached 2,000 points two games faster than Michael Smith (110) and 12 quicker than Jimmer Fredette (120). Only Danny Ainge (99) and Devin Durrant (106) reached 2,000 points quicker.
His 5 3-pointers moved him into a tie for 12th place with Michael Smith with 116 career 3-pointers. Monday was his 52nd straight double figure scoring game and his 52nd career 20-point game.
Austin fouled out with 1:59 left in overtime. He finished with 5 rebounds and a steal after playing 26 minutes.
Collinsworth scored in double figures for the first time this season and tied his season high with 6 assists. He scored 21 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 3 steals. Those steals moved Collinsworth into 18th at BYU in career steals passing Terrell Lyday.
Fischer finished with one of everything as he scored 11 points and added 2 assists, a rebound, a block and a steal.
Worthington started and recorded 1 rebound in his 8 minutes.
Winder came on as BYU's sixth man and finished with 14 points, 5 rebounds and an assist in 37 minutes.
Neilson came off the bench and scored 6-straight points for BYU in the first half to give the Cougars a spark. He finished with 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks and an assist. Neilson was also 2 of 5 from behind the arc.
Nixon grabbed 3 rebounds and addee 2 assists in 6 minutes.
Kaufusi finished with 3 points, 4 rebounds and a block in 15 minutes on the court.
Team Notes
BYU started Collinsworth, Fischer, Haws, Austin and Worthington for the third time this season. With those starters BYU is now 2-1 on the season.
Five Cougars scored in double figures (Collinsworth, Haws, Fischer, Neilson and Winder). The team high in rebounds was Collinsworth's 7 and his 6 assists also led the team.
San Diego State won the regulation and first overtime tips, while BYU was given the second overtime tip for an Aztec violation.
Runs
The Aztecs started on an 11-0 run before Fischer hit a 3-pointer to put the Cougars on the board. BYU tied it a 22-22 with 9:00 left in the first half after an 11-2 run that included 5 points from Winder, a 3-pointer from Haws, 2 points from Kaufusi and 1 from Collinsworth.
The Cougars cut the lead to one at 48-47 with 13:35 left in the second half on a 10-2 run that included 7 points from Collinsworth and an old-fashioned three-point play from Neilson.
Haws tied the game for the first time since 26-26 at 7:31 in the first half with a 3-pointer at 1:38 in the second half.
BYU's first lead came at 4:24 left in the first overtime as Haws put the Cougars up from the free-throw line 70-68.
A 7-0 run put BYU up 76-71 with 1:35 left in OT, but SDSU tied the game on a 5-0 run in the final 1:11. In its last multiple overtime game, BYU overcame a 7-point deficit to force a second OT and gave up an 8-point lead to go to a third OT before losing to Portland.
The Cougars are now 3-4 all-time at the Maui Invitational.
Monday was the first time BYU didn't score 90 points in a game this season, finishing 50 minutes worth of basketball with 87 points.
BYU is now 0-1 in overtime games after going 1-2 in overtime games last season. BYU beat San Francisco in overtime in the WCC tournament and lost at Oregon and at Portland.
