Player Notes

Carlino tied his career high with 30 points and hit the second most 3-pointers in a game in BYU history. His eight 3-pointers tied Mike Rose, who did it twice (2003 and 2007). The last person to hit at least eight was Jimmer Fredette who hit a record nine 3-pointers against Arizona in 2009. Carlino also added four steals, three rebounds and an assist.

Carlino passed Steve Schreiner, Travis Hansen and Mel Hutchins on the career scoring list. Carlino is now 34th with 1,142 points.

Tyler Haws

Haws finished with 15 points, five assists and two rebounds. His five assists were a season high. He scored in double digits for the 43rd straight game, the sixth longest streak in BYU history.

He passed Jeff Chatman for seventh on the career scoring list and now has 1,830. His made 3-pointer tied him with Todd Christensen for 17th all-time in 3-pointers made with 104. Haws moved up the season scoring list to ninth with 653 points, passing Timo Saarelainen and Michael Smith. He also passed his sophomore season in free throws made with 189, while tying Ken Roberts for the fifth most free throws made in a season.

Kyle Collinsworth

Collinsworth finished with seven points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and two steals. He totaled five rebounds against Gonzaga and grabbed five boards before the first five minutes against Portland.

Collinsworth is now in 12th place for most assists in a season with 148. He is also ninth in steals in a season with 51.

Nate Austin

Austin finished with seven rebounds, one point and one assist.

Anson Winder

Winder shot 7 of 8 from the field and finished with 19 points, one rebound and one assist in his second-straight start. Winder was perfect from the line again (4 of 4) and has hit 16 straight free throws.

Luke Worthington

Worthington started his first career game, scored five points and had an assist and a steal.

Eric Mika

Mika scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds.

Team Notes

Collinsworth, Winder, Haws, Worthington and Austin started the game for the Cougars. It is the first time Worthington has started and the first time this lineup has been used. It is also the third different group of starters in the past three games.

Haws, Winder and Carlino scored in double figures for BYU. The Cougars are now 2-3 when three players score in double figures.

BYU stretched its home win streak to 11 games, nine in conference and are 14-1 this season in the Marriott Center.

Runs

BYU took an early lead thanks to an 8-0 run that contributed to a 10-5 lead three minutes into the game. Haws hit a 3-pointer, Winder put in a second chance bucket for two poitns and Worthington used an and-one to make it eight-straight BYU points.

Another 8-0 run gave the Cougars a 20-9 lead with 11:41 left in the first half. On this run, Haws hit two shots and two free throws for six points and Mika added a putback dunk for two of his own.

A 6-0 run in the second half stretched the lead to 17 as Collinsworth dunked for two points, Austin made a free throw and Winder hit a 3-pointer to put BYU up 56-39 with 16:38 left in the game.

Minutes later, a 12-0 run where Carlino and Winder were responsible for every point put the Cougars up 25 at 70-45 with 12:24 left in the game. Carlino scored eight including two 3-pointers and a dunk. Winder added four points of his own.

A final 8-0 run pushed the lead back to 24 and put the game out of reach the rest of the way. Carlino scored five points and Sharp added two as BYU led 89-65 with 3:06 left in the game.

"We're growing a lot and I feel like we're having the most fun at this point in the year. Sometimes it feels like a grind at this point in the year, but we're really clicking and having a lot of fun together and that's really important."

Portland head coach Eric Reveno

"Rebounding and transition defense were two areas that we were solid on. Where we broke down was on offensive execution, allowing them to have nine steals and that hurt our transition defense. Then our offensive execution — I really give them credit for pressuring us and forcing us to take their shots, not the ones we wanted."

On game plan for Haws and Mika:
"What we did at our place that we didn’t do here is we allowed all the other guys that were 2 for 2 and Winder going 7 for 8. The efficiency at which they scored — even the game when Haws scored 48, he had to take a lot of shots. For Carlino and Winder to get those numbers, it was pretty impressive."

On BYU being in the WCC:
"It’s great. First of all, the hospitality and the class of the organization — we had two guys hurt yesterday and the BYU medical staff was really gracious in doing all they could to help us and help those two players and that’s very much appreciated. Competitively from a basketball standpoint, I’ve said this about Gonzaga and I’ll say it about BYU and I’ve said it about Saint Mary’s. I want people in the league that we can grow to and be better. I want to be as good as they are and they set a nice standard for us."
