SAN DIEGO -- BYU head football coach Bronco Mendenhall announced today that defensive back Trenton Trammell out of the City College of San Francisco has signed a national letter of intent to attend BYU starting in January.

"Trent is a talented young man,” Mendenhall said. “He is not only an excellent football player but also an experienced athlete from a program with a proven record of winning football. We look forward to having him join our program.”

Trammell is a 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback from Oakland, Calif., who attended Bishop O’Dowd High School prior to two seasons at City College of San Francisco. He will enter BYU as a junior with three years to complete his two remaining seasons of eligibility.

During his two years at City College of San Francisco under head coach George Rush, Trammell helped the Rams achieve a 22-2 record and advance to the state title game both seasons, winning the championship in 2011. He totaled 57 tackles, including 43 solo takedowns, along with five interceptions and 22 pass breakups while helping CCSF finish atop the NorCal Conference each year. He had a conference-best 19 passes defended in 2011 while helping the Rams earn the No. 1 ranking in the nation by JCfootball.com.

Trammell, who runs a 4.5 40-yard dash, was also recruited by a number of other schools, including Boise State, Utah, New Mexico and UTEP.

BYU will conclude the 2012 season tonight facing San Diego State in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. The game kicks off at 5 p.m. PT on ESPN.
