PROVO, Utah – The BYU defense got going in Day 6 of fall camp with another morning practice at the start of two-a-days.

“We got a lot of work done today and we’ll have an afternoon,” head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “We’re going to practice and then scrimmage Thursday. It should be a heavy day but it’ll be great to see where some of our younger guys are, get some great depth established and get some reps for some key ‘one’s’ as well.

Refs were present for the first time this camp in Wednesday’s morning practice. Passing was a focus with extended 7-on-7 drills and one-on-one work.

In practice-ending 11-on-11 work, linebacker Spencer Hadley highlighted a productive defense with an interception and a pair of would-be sacks. Defensive backs Sawyer Powell and Micah Hanneman also had pass break-ups in the team session, where players worked on situational downs.

Senior quarterback Riley Nelson was 2 for 5 for 17 yards while Adam Hine squeezed through the middle for a 40-yard touchdown. James Lark and Taysom Hill also took snaps.

With a roster loaded with seniors, the 2012 team has valuable depth established.

“There are not as many questions at most positions but then we’re trying to get enough volume at key spots,” Mendenhall said. “That’s why the emphasis has been to practice healthy.”

The team is back on the field this afternoon before suiting up in full pads for Thursday’s scrimmage at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The practice is open to the public and begins at 10 a.m.
