PROVO, Utah - After a spirited first week of spring, the BYU football team showed sparks on both sides of the ball to begin its second week of practice on Monday.

The Cougars went back to practicing without pads on a sunny day outdoors. After drills, senior quarterback Riley Nelson led the first-team offense against its defensive counterparts.

After an 11-yard swing pass to junior Josh Quezada, Nelson threw down the middle of the field to junior Kaneakua Friel. After turning back to tip the pass, over the head of the defender, Friel caught the ball just before hitting his back for a 29-yard gain.

Despite sacks by senior Simote Vea and senior Ian Dulan during the drive, senior James Lark came in and quarterback, going 4 for 4 for 24 yards, including completions to Terenn Houk, Cody Raymond, Darin Tuttle and Kurt Henderson. The drive ended when Lark's scramble on third down was ruled just short of the 10 yards needed.

Nelson, who finished 7 of 8 for 78 yards on the day, quarterbacked a touchdown drive before the session ended. Nelson hit Cody Hoffman down the sideline on a leaping catch, eventually setting up a 7-yard throw to Marcus Mathews for the score.
