FORT WORTH, Texas - After arriving Monday afternoon to Fort Worth, Texas, the BYU football team practiced twice and has been enjoying the start of bowl game festivities for the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl, including the team “Welcome Party” at Billy Bob’s Texas in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards.

BYU practiced Monday afternoon and again Tuesday morning. After practice, players have been able to enjoy exploring the streets of downtown Fort Worth, along with just lounging around the hotel’s hospitality room, featuring video games, snacks and other activities.

The first official bowl event, the “Welcome Party” at Billy Bob’s Texas brought both teams together for the first time with dinner and entertainment. Both teams heard from various Armed Forces Bowl officials and were welcomed to the city of Fort Worth in style with Texas-style barbeque and several fun activities.

“We have had a super experience tonight and I think both teams are enjoying themselves,” head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “It’s just one more thing that the Armed Forces Bowl has done first class.

Each team’s head coach and athletic director received cowboy hats from Peters Brothers Hats to commemorate their trip to Texas but the main event of the party was the “Minute to Win it” competition between the Cougars and the Golden Hurricane. Ten players from each team were selected to participate in unique games ranging from bubble blowing, pulling tissues out of a box and stacking up tin cans. BYU ended up victorious, winning three of the five games to take home the win.

“We are down here to play football so practice has been great but this event tonight was out of this world,” quarterback Riley Nelson said. “The whole bowl game experience has been really great.”

The Cougars will practice each morning during the week and then take part in several different events scheduled for the bowl week, including a visit to a children’s hospital, team dinner and comedy show along with other activities before Friday’s game.

The Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl, which will be broadcast nationally on ESPN and ESPN Radio is scheduled to kickoff at 11 a.m. CST on Friday, December 30.
