Nelson, Ogletree, Hoffman Earn Weekly Honors
BYU quarterback Riley Nelson, BYU linebacker Brandon Ogletree and Navy placekicker Jon Teague have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week, for games through Oct. 15.
Nelson is honored on Offense, while Ogletree is cited on Defense and Teague is the award recipient on Special Teams. Nelson and Teague are two-time weekly honorees, while Ogletree is honored for the first time this season. Ogletree was also an honorable mention for the College Football Performance Awards Linebacker Performer of the Week.
Wide receiver Cody Hoffman was also an honorable mention for the CFPA Wide Receiver Performer of the Week and was named the Rivals.com Independent Player of the Week. Hoffman set career highs with nine catches for 162 yards against Oregon State. He also caught one touchdown pass and recorded two kick returns for 40 yards.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
BYU QB Riley Nelson
A junior from Logan, Utah, Nelson was BYU’s offensive pace-setter in the Cougars’ 38-28 win at Oregon State. Making only his second start of the season, Nelson completed 17 of 27 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns, while adding a team-high 87 rushing yards on 12 carries in leading BYU to a fourth consecutive win.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
BYU LB Brandon Ogletree
A junior from McKinney, Texas, Ogletree helped BYU take control in the second half of its 38-28 win at Oregon State. Ogletree forced turnovers on each of the Beavers’ first three possessions of the third quarter, intercepting a pass and causing two fumbles. BYU’s leading tackler on the season, Ogletree added one and a half tackles for loss, part of his six-stop effort in Corvallis.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Navy PK Jon Teague
A senior from Hickory, N.C., Teague had a downbeat finish to an otherwise solid day in Navy’s 21-20 loss at Rutgers. Teague’s 31-yard third-quarter field goal gave the Midshipmen a 17-7 lead that would disappear after back-to-back touchdowns by the home team. Teague then hit from 41 yards to draw Navy within a single point at 21-20, but a 34-yard FG attempt was blocked with under five minutes to play, as the Scarlet Knights hung on for the victory. Teague was also 2-for-2 on PATs and recorded touchbacks on two of his five kickoffs.
