Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd, Navy linebacker Matt Warrick and BYU placekicker Justin Sorensen have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week, for games through Sept. 10. Floyd wins his second consecutive weekly award on Offense, while Warrick is cited on Defense and Sorensen is honored on Special Teams. Sorensen was also given an honorable mention by the College Football Performance Awards.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Notre Dame WR Michael Floyd
A senior from St. Paul, Minn., Floyd followed up a 12-catch, 154-yard effort last week with 13 receptions for 159 yards as Notre Dame lost a 35-31 thriller at Michigan. Already Notre Dame’s record-holder in career receptions, Floyd is the new Fighting Irish career receiving yardage leader, with his 2,852 yards now atop the tally, ahead of previous standard-setter Jeff Samardzija. Floyd’s 15th 100-yard receiving game ties the Notre Dame career record set by Golden Tate.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Navy LB Matt Warrick
A junior from Chesterfield, Mo., Warrick recorded a team-high 12 tackles, adding a fumble recovery and pass break-up in Navy’s 40-14 win at Western Kentucky. Warrick helped the Midshipmen hold the Hilltoppers to only 277 yards in total offense, as Navy improved to 2-0 on the season.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
BYU PK Justin Sorensen
A sophomore from South Jordan, Utah, Sorensen was perfect on his placement kicks, splitting the uprights on field goals of 30, 33 and 32 yards, while making his lone PAT attempt in BYU’s 17-16 loss at #21/24 Texas. Sorensen added a touchback as the Longhorns started at or inside their own 20-yard line on three of Sorensen’s five kickoffs.
Sorensen was also recognized by the College Football Performance Awards as an honorable mention for placekicker of the week. For more information on the College Football Performance Awards CLICK HERE.
