DALLAS — For its servicing of media during the 2022 football season, BYU has been recognized by the Football Writers Association of America with a Super 11 Award as one of the best performing athletic communications departments in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision.

It’s a first-time recognition for BYU. The Super 11 award dates back to the 2009 season.

From the FWAA’s announcement of the honorees:

“This year’s winners were deemed to have had excellent accessibility during the week of the game and after the game — with a program’s players, coaches and assistant coaches — along with the other listed criteria on Page 21 of the 2022-23 FWAA Directory.

"FWAA members provided input during the season when press boxes were judged on how well they were run and maintained in terms of neutrality, pool reporters, noise level and accessibility to the press box that could affect a media person’s ability to his or her job.”

As an independent in football over the past decade, BYU Athletic Communications has also hosted its own national media day each year. The department also is involved with the planning and execution of multiple live television programs in partnership with BYUtv, including the BYU football alumni game, the Deep Blue series, coaches shows and more.

During 2022, BYU Athletic Communications facilitated more than 1,800 interviews with BYU football student-athletes, coaches and administrators, contributing to a variety of local, national and international news stories, previews, recaps and features in print, audio, video, social and other digital formats.

BYU Athletic Communications serves as the principle facilitators with broadcast partners on game days and in preparation throughout the week, hosting production meetings with producers, directors, play-by-play and color commentators with ESPN, Fox, CBS and others.

About the Super 11 and FWAA

In January 2009, the FWAA formed the first Super 11 Committee. The concept is supported by the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA). The FWAA has now awarded Super 11 to 79 different programs over the years.

Founded in 1941, the Football Writers Association of America consists of journalists, broadcasters, publicists, photographers and key executives in all areas of college football. The FWAA works to govern media access and game-day operations while presenting awards and honors, including an annual FWAA All-America Team. For more information about the FWAA and its program and initiatives, Contact Executive Director Steve Richardson at 214-870-6516 or tiger@fwaa.com.
