Cougars Enter Top 25

PROVO -- BYU entered the top-25 rankings in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll released Tuesday. The Cougars are ranked No. 24 as one of three Mountain West Conference teams in the coaches’ poll.

BYU defeated Washington 23-17 in its season opener Saturday to put the Cougars back in the national top 25 after being listed No. 28 in the preseason coaches’ poll. BYU has been among the nation's top-25 teams during 34 of the last 36 weeks dating back to November 2007. BYU is 159-46 when ranked in the Top 25 and has won 28 of its last 33 games as a ranked team, dating back to 2006.

The Cougars join fellow MWC members TCU, ranked fifth, and Utah, tied for 20th, in the coaches’ poll. The Horned Frogs are ranked No. 4 in The Associated Press Top 25 while the Utes are No. 20 according to the media. BYU is listed tied for 32nd in others receiving votes in the AP rankings. The Cougars were listed No. 34 in the AP preseason poll.

Alabama, Ohio State and Boise State claim the top three spots in both polls. Texas and TCU are flip-flopped at No. 4 and No. 5 with the Longhorns given the edge in the coaches’ poll. Upcoming BYU opponent Florida State is ranked No. 17 in AP and No. 18 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.
