BYU announces addition of transfer QB Kedon Slovis

PROVO, Utah – BYU has signed former USC and University of Pittsburgh quarterback Kedon Slovis as a graduate transfer for the 2023 season. 

Slovis, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound product of Scottsdale, Arizona, will join the Cougars in January as a midyear enrollee with one year of eligibility remaining.

“We are pleased to announce Kedon Slovis will be joining our football program,” said BYU head coach Kalani Sitake. “He’s an extremely talented quarterback with a wealth of experience as a successful starter at the Power 5 level. We are excited that Kedon has chosen to conclude his college career at BYU.”

A starter of 37 career games between USC and Pittsburgh, Slovis started in 11 games for Pitt last season and led the Trojans on the field in 26 games from 2019-2021.

“Kedon is an effortless passer, great leader and one of the most accurate quarterbacks in college football,” BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said. “I’ve enjoyed watching his calm demeanor. He is always poised, never too high or too low. I have been so impressed with his methodical approach to this decision to come to BYU. I can’t wait for him to join us in January.”

Slovis has completed 836 of 1,268 passes in his career for a completion percentage of 65.9 percent. He has thrown for 68 career touchdowns and 9,973 career passing yards, which ranks No. 13 among active quarterbacks in the FBS.

Last season at Pitt, Slovis went 7-4 as the starter and threw for 2,397 yards and 10 touchdowns. He made his Panther debut in a rivalry game against West Virginia, leading Pitt to a 38-31 win. Slovis threw for 308 yards and a score against the Mountaineers.

At USC, Slovis finished his three years with 7,576 passing yards, seventh all-time at USC. His 58 career touchdown passes for the Trojans ranks No. 5 in school history. His five 400-yard passing games at USC are a Trojan record and his 515-yard game as a freshman set another school record.

In 2019 as a true freshman, Slovis completed 282 of 392 passes for 3,502 yards, 30 touchdowns and just nine interceptions. As a freshman, Slovis was No. 3 nationally among all quarterbacks in completion percentage at 71.9 percent, seventh in pass efficiency at 167.6 and ninth in passing yards per game with 291.8––all USC freshman records.

Slovis was the 2019 Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and AP Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year and made All-Pac-12 honorable mention.  He was a 2019 FWAA National Freshman of the Year semifinalist and made the FWAA Freshman All-American First Team and Pro Football Focus Freshman All-American Third Team.

In 2020, a shortened pandemic season, Slovis, a team captain, started all six games, and completed 67.0 percent of his passes for 1,921 yards with 17 TDs and seven interceptions. He ranked first nationally in completions per game (29.5), sixth in passing yards per game (320.2), 13th in total offense and 18th in completion percentage.

Slovis was named to the 2020 All-Pac-12 First Team, AP All-Pac-12 First Team, Phil Steele All-Pac-12 First Team.

In a 2021 season slowed by injuries, Slovis played and started nine games for the Trojans, completing 193 of 297 passes for 2,153 yards and 11 touchdowns. 

In addition to Slovis, BYU announced 16 signees at the start of the early signing period Wednesday.
