PROVO -- Fall camp continued on Tuesday with the team holding its first morning practice and donning shoulder pads.

The offense was sharp during the first session of 11-on-11 drills. Senior quarterback Max Hall started things off completing 5-of-5 passes to five different receivers. Starting on his own 20-yard line, Hall found sophomore Matt Marshall for a nine-yard gain. McKay Jacobson and Andrew George were the next targets, catching passes of 15 and 29 yards, respectively. After a 15-yarder to tight end Dennis Pitta, Hall cumulated the scoring drive with a short two-yard completion to redshirt freshman Braden Brown.

The first-team offense continued to click on its next set, as Pitta and Marshall each caught passes from Hall. Back-to-back 10-yard completions to O'Neill Chambers kept the chains moving, setting up a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jacobson.

“Today was the most impressive offensive segment so far,” said BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall. “Max did very well calling his own plays. After only three days of practice I was very pleased.”

Defensively, Coleby Clawson recovered a botched snap, while Romney Fuga, who recently returned from an LDS mission, picked up a sack against senior Brenden Gaskins.

“Romney is playing beyond what I expected for him at this point,” said Mendenhall. “Coming home in June and playing the way he has been playing is great.”

Newcomer Peni Maka'afi had several carries with the second and third-team offenses, totaling 15 yards on four carries.

Hall went 16-of-23 on the day for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Harvey Unga led all receivers with three catches for 30 yards.

Practice will continue at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Practice is closed to the public.
