Rex named to FWAA Freshman All-America watch list

PROVO, Utah — BYU tight end Isaac Rex has been named to the second Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Watch List of the season, the organization announced Thursday. Rex is one of five tight ends to be named to the list that includes 63 overall candidates. 

The 6-6, 247-pound, redshirt freshman from San Clemente, Calif., ranks No. 9 in the nation (second among all tight ends) in receiving touchdowns with eight. Rex took over the starting tight end role when senior All-America candidate Matt Bushman was lost for the season prior to the season opener.

Rex is fourth on the No. 8 ranked Cougars in receiving with 24 receptions for 271 yards. He has two touchdown receptions in three of the last four games.

A list of seven semifinalists for FWAA Freshman of the Year will be released following games on Dec. 12. Then three finalists will be named after the Dec. 19 football games. The 20th annual FWAA Freshman All-American Team, along with the FWAA Freshman of the Year, will be announced in January 2021. 

Since 2014, four Cougars have been named FWAA Freshman All-Americans, including Tejan Koroma (2014), Thomas Shoaf (2016), Matt Bushman (2017) and James Empey (2018).
