PROVO, Utah - BYU football spent another afternoon under the sun with the second fall camp practice getting wrapped up early Friday evening.

The team continued to prepare for the 2017 season without pads as they work toward full contact next week. Veteran leaders and newcomers were all in action throughout the day, including several players getting a lot of reps during team sessions at the end of practice.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

The following quotes are from Friday's post-practice media availability.

Head coach Kalani Sitake (Video)
“It was really good. We have to work on some timing and when you go 11-on-11 it is a little bit more difficult. Especially with a good defense. But I have been really pleased with the improvement from yesterday to today. I think our quarterbacks are throwing the ball really well. We have to deal with a few mistimed throws and a few errant throws and a few drops but I think from yesterday to today we improved a lot more. I think the receivers are a talented bunch, they are just young. I am really excited about the way the passing game is going.”

“I think overall, I like the way the defense improved. I like the way they ran to the ball. They made some plays. I think it is hard to determine without watching the film but overall I would have to say we did some really good things on both sides of the ball.”

“Coach Tuiaki is going to get them (the defensive line) right. I have a lot of confidence in him as a coach. They are disruptive and we are doing some things up front that give them a little more freedom to be more aggressive. That’s what Coach Tuiaki is really about running the defense. I think we are going to be fine there, talent wise. We have enough guys that have experience and leadership so it is just going to depend on how much the younger guys and the depth can come. We have plenty of time and if they keep improving like I have seen from day one to day two when we’ve got the pads on then I will be really excited when we get to start the season.”

“We have to try to get the best 11 on the field. That means we have to be creative and try to find guys at different places and get the best 11 in different situations.”

“I think a lot of them (the wide receivers) have a lot of things to prove, but that’s the game. Last year you guys weren’t worried about Jamaal Williams and this year we are looking around and asking who is going to be the next guy up at running back. Next year we will go through some more guys and it is just part of football. I know they are talented and no one knows anything about them yet. I promise you they have a lot of talent and people will know who they are. I think we will look back at this a year from now and they will be an experienced bunch and we will pick on someone else to help motivate.”

Wide receiver Jonah Trinnaman
"I think we look pretty good. It is only the second day but I think a lot of people are making plays and are comfortable. I think everyone is stepping up and making plays. I come out here trying to think of how I can get better every day so I think that is what everyone else is doing."

"This year what I see early on is a lot more confidence. Our receiver group is a lot more confident in what we can do. We want to be a position we can look to to make plays."

"Coaches want to see everybody. That is what fall camp is for. I think they are just trying to see what people can do and give them opportunities."

"I think everybody can play. It's experience, it's new; it's faster for these young guys but they are catching on really well. I am excited to see how they progress."

Defensive lineman Corbin Kaufusi (Video)
"One of the things the coaches have instilled in us with all the sound technique that they are teaching us is that we have to be confident. If you are not confident then the likelihood of losing goes up a lot higher."

"The thing that is different this year is that we have a foundation and we are building off of it. We aren't just jumping into the dark. Now we know where we are going and know what we can do so let's just keep going."

"One of the things we are building is team chemistry. Last year with a whole knew coaching staff it was 'how are we going to react with everyone else and how are we going to mesh with the coaches?' Obviously, it's amazing. Our coaching staff is awesome and the guys are doing really well making those relationships. You are more coachable when you have that kind of relationship."

"I think the depth is looking really good for the defensive line. We have a lot of guys that got playing time last year and a lot of the young guys coming in are going to make a splash. I guess I can't say one because they are all doing so well and once we get the pads on they will start to come out more into the open."
