1975 BYU Hall of Fame
Owen Rowe, the "human rocket," was high point man in every college track meet in which he participated except one. His most spectacular race was a low hurdle competition with a race horse at a Fourth of July celebration. In college competition he set state records in the low hurdles (24.1 seconds) and broad jump (23 feet 4 3/4 inches). He also held records in the 100-yard dash and 220-yard dash. He earned four varsity letters in basketball, three in football, and four in track. In 1927 he received he Anderberg medal for being the best all-around athlete at BYU.
Owen closed his BYU career by leading the track team to its first conference championship. He won the meet on his birthday and announced his engagement the same day. On June 6, 1929, he married Lois Brockbank, and they have three sons and a daughter.
After graduating from BYU with a B.S. degree in physical education, Owen spent two successful years with the Long Beach Athletic Club, which requires outstanding athletic ability as a prerequisite for membership. He returned to Utah and coached at Manti High School, Springville and Spanish Fork.
