2003 BYU Hall of Fame

During his college career, and since joining the pro ranks, 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir has helped to continue BYU’s tradition as a renowned name in the world of golf.

While at BYU from 1989-92, Weir led the golf team through his excellence on the course, placing second at the 1990 WAC Championships his sophomore year. Weir earned Second-Team All-American honors and was named WAC Player of the Year his senior season. He also won the John Geertsen Award, annually given to the Cougar golfer with the best stroke average, in 1992.

After his BYU career, the Canadian golfer turned professional in 1992 and joined the PGA Tour. In 1993 Weir was named Canadian Tour Rookie of the Year. He made history in April 2003 by becoming the first Canadian and only the second left-hander to win a major with his outstanding play at the Masters Tournament.

After winning the Masters, 2002 champion Tiger Woods helped Weir into his first green jacket at Augusta. To complement his 2003 Masters Championship, Weir also won the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and the Nissan Open. His consistent play has placed him among the top five money-winners on the PGA Tour.

Other highlights from his professional career include his first PGA tour title at the Air Canada Championship in 1999. Weir also captured first place in the 200 World Golf Championship in Spain, where he defeated a world-class field, including Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood and Vijay Singh. In 2001, Weir went on to win the Tour Championship. He is a two-time recipient of the Canadian Press Male Athlete of the Year Award, being selected in 2000 and 2001.

A recreation management graduate at BYU, Weir has gone forth to serve the community with his contributions to charity organizations including the Sunshine Dreams for Kids, the Alzheimer Society and Putting for Preemies. He also hosted two charity events in 2002, the Mike Weir/Dino Ciccarelli Charity Classic and the Globe and Mail Mike Weir Charity Classic, to raise money for those in need.

Weir has a road that goes past South Maintain Golf course named after him, and Utah governor Mike Leavitt signed a proclamation on May 12, 2003, Weir’s birthday, to have all future May 12ths known as “Mike Weir Day.”

He was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada after being appointed to the Order of Ontario in 2003. In 2017, Weir was inducted into the Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
