Men's Golf to Host Cougar Day
PROVO, Utah –Several Cougar greats will return to the Riverside Country Club on Oct. 10 for Cougar Day, a men’s golf sponsored event.
Former Cougars Johnny Miller, Mike Weir, Mike Reid, Dean Wilson, Keith Clearwater and Daniel Summerhays will be present to take part in the day’s events. Each of these greats is currently participating in or has participated on the PGA tour during their professional careers.
“It’s a time for former players to come back and celebrate their accomplishments as a team,” said BYU Director of Golf Todd Miller.
This will be the first time since its inception in 1974 that BYU golf legend Karl Tucker will not take part in the event he started. However, Tucker and his wife Joanne have since passed away, making this a unique experience for all who will be present.
“Karl and his wife Joanne have passed away, so we hope to create a scholarship in their name,” Miller said.
Tucker established a tradition of excellent golf at BYU. His teams were constantly ranked in the upper echelon of the nation and won the 1981 NCAA championship.
“He created a great tradition with great players,” Miller said.
That tradition is what helped to spark the idea of bringing back former players to Provo. It provided an opportunity for the public to watch Cougar stars on the PGA tour.
The day will start with a free clinic at 9 a.m. put on by attending pros at Riverside County Club and is open to the public. Following the clinic teams of four will tee of at 10 a.m. in a friendly competition that is also open to the public.
