Parents are Michael and Kathleen Sumko... one of six children... served an LDS Church mission in San Juan, Puerto Rico... an Eagle Scout.
At BYU
In 2001: Played in 12 regular-season games as a junior... recorded eight tackles on the season, including five unassisted takedowns... recorded his first-career interception (at San Diego State), adding a 30-yard return... also credited with a pass deflection against the Aztecs.
Before BYU
Graduated as the valedictorian at Box Elder High School in 1996... a two-time letterwinner at Box Elder... helped lead team to a 12-1 record and state championship as a senior... earned all-region and all-state honors... a member of the Utah High School Association Hall of Fame... also earned letterman honors in basketball (3), track (3) and baseball (1)... advanced to the state high school track & field championships as a junior and senior... finished second in the long jump and 4x100-meter relay... took fourth place in the 200 meters and fifth in the high jump.
An Academic All-American at Ricks College... a two-year letterwinner for the Vikings.
