Parents are LeGrande (Grit) and Sherry...brother of former Cougar quarterbacks Steve (BYU 1980-83, now with San Francisco 49ers) and Mike (1982-86 at BYU)...father played at BYU in the 50s...is the great-great-great grandson of Brigham Young...served a mission to Toronto, Canada from 1988-90...married Stacey Stratford in April, 1994...recruited by Maryland, Syracuse and Boston college...majoring in English.

Before BYU

Honor student at Greenwich High...lettered in football, basketball and baseball...all-state, all-county and all-New York area in football...coached by Mike Ornato (Ithaca).

Freshman Year 1988

Played with the junior varsity.

Sophmore Year 1992

Had a 24-yard completion in spring game...moved from the fourth unit to back-up after injuries to John Walsh and Steve Clements...played in four games, including last game when Ryan Hancock was injured...started for BYU in the Aloha Bowl and was selected MVP by the media from BYU's team...was 15 of 31 for 262 yards, one interception and one touchdown pass against Kansas.

Junior Year 1993

Saw a lot of playing time against Notre Dame when John Walsh was injured after three series in the first quarter...Young played one series in the first quarter against the Irish and ended the game with 12 of 23 in passing for 77 yards, scoring one TD rushing and throwing for another...had a 23-yard run against Notre Dame.
