Born 4/12/71 in Houston...parents are Joe and Jill...father was a quarterback at Texas (1955-57)...mother was a Texas cheerleader...grandfather was a Texas baseball player...younger brother, Chuck, is a quarterback at Houston...recruited by Texas, BYU, Alabama and LSU...learned sign language as part of special education major.
Before BYU
Named to several high school All-America teams including Parade magazine and USA Today, which named him the Texas High School Player of the Year in 1989...set a state career passing record with 8,204 yards...threw for 3,712 yards and 35 touchdowns in senior year...qualified for the national junior Olympics in the high jump...coached by his father at Huntsville High.

Listed at number three going into fall practice.
Transferred to BYU in August but sat out due to NCAA transfer rule.
Competed as one of five for the spot vacated by Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer...emerged from spring practice in a two-man race with John Walsh...had a TD pass and was four of eight for 134 yards in the spring game...became the starting quarterback after an injury to Walsh against UCLA...suffered a shoulder dislocation in first quarter of Hawai'i game...underwent surgery in mid-October in Los Angeles.
Participated in non-contact drills in the spring...started against Fresno State because of an injury to Walsh in the Notre Dame game...had a good closing series in both the UCLA and Notre Dame games.
Threw a 59-yard TD to Tim Nowatzke in the spring game, where he was 25 of 33 for 284 yards.
