Born 6/19/73 in Denton...parents are James H. Freeland, and Dave and June Duet...married Debbie Dimond, former BYU basketball player and current volleyball, in June, 1995...recruited by UCLA, Iowa, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Boston College, Oklahoma and Texas...majoring in communications.

Before BYU

Graduated from Amador Valley High in Pleasanton, California, with four letters in football, basketball and track, and two baseball...teammate of Ed Lamb and Jared Kennedy...two-time all-league and All-Northern California on offense and defense...Northern Cal Athlete of the Year...high school All-America in track...set school record in shot put (61-3) and discus (191-7)...coached by Rick Sira (Hayward).

Lettered in track, where he threw the shot 47 3/4 and the discus 159-5 and placed seventh at the WAC outdoors...had a great clothesline tackle at Fresno State which made the ESPN highlight reel...started against Air Force, Colorado State and New Mexico...had an assisted tackle at Notre Dame...had four tackles and a fumble recovery at Air Force.

Placed fourth in WAC hammer throw (outdoors) with a toss of 162-9 1/2.
