Parents are John and Janet...served a church mission to Bolivia and was featured in a Sports Illustrated story on the missionary program...graduated second in his high school class...recruited by UCLA, Stanford and California.

Before BYU

High School - Won all-South Sequoia League honors at quarterback and defensive back in '82...named Shafter High football MVP in '81 and '82...a three-time all-league selection in basketball...placed in CIF Central pole vault at 13-6...won four letters in track...selected the county's outstanding athlete...California state age-group decathlon champion...placed first in the league in discus...coached by Mike Kesse (Sacramento State).

BYU Hall of Fame

Freshman Year 1983

Lettered as a freshman...played mainly on special teams...had two interceptions with the varsity.

Sophmore Year 1986

Played on the second team but saw extensive action as a fifth defensive back...had two interceptions on the year, one being a one-handed pickoff against UTEP...knocked unconcious vs. Oregon State and missed Utah game...had eight unassisted tackles and assisted on three more...WAC all-academic selection...was the backup punter.

Junior Year 1987

Stepped in early when Jeff Fuller was hurt and never relinquished the weak safety spot...third on the team in defensive points...had 81 tackles, three fumble recoveries and four interceptions...WAC defensive player of the week against Air Force...Academic All-WAC and All-District.
