Robinson, Lew Win Individual Titles

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Junior Ada Robinson led the BYU women’s track team on day three of the Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships with a record breaking performance in the high jump.

“The high jump was one of the most exciting events of the day,” head coach Patrick Shane said. “Ada (Robinson) performed great and helped lead the team on a great day. We qualified everyone we wanted to qualify and had some great performances.”

Robinson cleared 1.86m (6-01.25) to take the event win, a mark that stands as a MWC record, a MWC meet record, a stadium record and a personal record. Robinson also won the MWC indoor high jump championship.

Diana Blauer finished second to Robinson in the high jump by clearing 1.77m (5-09.75). The combination of Robinson and Blauer scored 18 points for the Cougars in the event.

BYU also finished in first and second in the 10000m run. Senior Cecily Lemmon-Lew, the 2009 MWC Champion in the event, finished first in 36:11.41, a stadium record. Morgan Haws crossed the line in second in 36:14.73.

“It was great to win an individual championship in my last season and in BYU’s last season in the Mountain West,” Lemmon-Lew said. “Morgan (Haws) helped push me those last few laps and we helped each other improve our times.”

The 3000m steeplechase final also took place on Friday. Katy Andrews finished second in 10:49.50 to score eight points for BYU, while senior Kari Hardt finished fifth in 11:08.87 to score four team points.

In the finals of the pole vault Kelli Ehardt managed a third place finish with a height of 3.83m (12-06.75). Teammate Christen Botteron also cleared 3.83m (12-06.75) but had one more scratch than Ehardt, resulting in a fourth place finish.

Elizabeth Wilson, a sophomore, completed the finals of the heptathlon on Thursday. In her first multi-events competition of the outdoor season, Wilson finished fourth overall with 4597 points.

Porshe Giddings competed in the preliminaries of the 100m and 200m on Friday and advanced in both races. Freshman Aubrey Hale also advanced to the finals of the 100m.

In the hurdles events, Fatima Makakala and Alyssa Christensen advanced in the 100m hurdles while Christensen and Allysa Hansen advanced in the 400m hurdles.

Also advancing to the final day of competition was Lacey Bleazard in the 800m. The junior has never lost an 800m final race. Sarah Edwards and Nicole Clark also advanced to the 800m finals.

The Cougars head into the final day of competition in first place. BYU has 67 team points after eight scored events, while New Mexico sits in second with 58 points.
