Freshman High Jumper Earns All-America Honors
FAYETTEVILLE -- Ada Robinson made her NCAA debut a success for the BYU women’s track and field team, earning All-America honors in the high jump event on Friday at the Outdoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
“We are all really excited for Ada,” said BYU women’s head track and field coach Craig Poole. “She was well prepared and did a great job of competing on a national stage.”
Robinson saved her best for the most important meet of the season, recording a personal best in the high jump event, clearing 6-00.00. Her fifth place jump ties her for sixth on BYU’s all-time records list.
“Ada has been getting better and better all year long and it all came together today,” Poole said. “It’s exciting to know she will be in our program for a few more years. She is a very hard worker and will only get stronger.”
The BYU true freshman, is the first high jumper for the Cougars to record All-America honors in the outdoor high jump since Lindsey Metcalf in 2004. Robinson, who tied for fifth-place, secured BYU 2.5 points keeping the Cougars in the top 20 at nationals.
BYU currently sits in eighteenth place with 10.5 points. Rounding out the top five are Oregon, Southern California, Texas, Florida St., and Arizona St.
In the heptathlon, All-American junior, Amy Menlove, was unable to finish her quest of repeating as National Champion in the multi-event competition due to an ongoing back injury.
Menlove won the 2009 NCAA Indoor Pentathlon National Championship and will look to get healthy and make another run at next years nationals.
BYU will conclude its season on Saturday with Lacey Cramer and the 800-meter event. Cramer, the 2009 NCAA Indoor 800-meter National Champion will aim for a repeat performance beginning at 12:19 p.m. CT. The race will air live on CBS Sports.
