PROVO -- ESPN the Magazine announced its Academic All-District women’s track & field/cross country teams and BYU senior Amy Layne was voted to the District 8 Second Team.

Layne, a chemical engineering major from Fairfield, Texas, has been successful both on the track and in the classroom during her four-year collegiate career at BYU. She currently has a 3.82 GPA and has maintained a 3.5 GPA or higher every semester. She has also earned Academic All-MWC and the MWC Scholar-Athlete Award every semester at BYU.

Layne currently ranks in the top 30 in the nation in the 3000-meter steeplechase and helped BYU finish No. 3 in the nation in the 2009 indoor season.

As a freshman in 2006, Layne won first in the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:32.36) at the NCAA West Regional meet and earned All-America honors. At the conclusion of her freshman year she travelled to Beijing where she placed eighth in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the World Junior Track and Field Championships. In 2007, during her sophomore season, she ran a career-best 10:01.19 in the steeplechase to get into the finals at the NCAA National Championships.

"Amy is one of our bright student-athletes," BYU women's track and field head coach Craig Poole said. "Her ability to balance marriage, school and athletics is incredible. We are very proud of the way she has represented BYU."

To be nominated for academic all-district consideration, student-athletes must have a current cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher. Athletes must also have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing.
