Women Win 20th Straight Outdoor Title; Men Claim 19th Overall

COLORADO SPRINGS -- Trailing by 16 points entering the final day of competition at the 2002 Mountain West Conference Track & Field Championships, the BYU men's track & field team racked up 89 points on the final day of competition to claim its 19th overall outdoor league title, including its fifth straight league outdoor championship. The BYU women, who held a 36-point lead entering the final day, cruised to a record 20th straight outdoor league title with 193.5 points.

"It's a new experience every year," BYU head women's coach Craig Poole said. "It really is. We never get tired of winning. We're just as thrilled about winning our twentieth as we were with winning our first. It never gets old. We've had a lot of great student-athletes come through our program over the years, and this year has been no exception."

BYU won the women's competition in dominating fashion 193.5 points, followed by Colorado State with 147.3 points. San Diego State finished third with 119.3 points, UNLV was fourth with 98 points, Wyoming finished fifth with 95 points, Utah scored 75.3 to finish sixth and New Mexico took seventh with 57.5 points. Air Force finished in eighth place with 32 points.

Individual winners for the Cougar women include Jaime Cottle (1,500), Michaela Mannova (3,000-meter steeplechase), Nikki Hughes (long jump), Lindsey Steele (high jump) and Lindsey Johnson (javelin).

Poole was named the MWC Women's Coach of the Year, while senior Nikki Hughes earned top-scoring honors with 32.5 points and was voted as one of three outstanding performers in the meet.

On the men's side, the Cougars racked up 228 points to claim the outdoor title over Colorado State, which won the indoor title earlier this year. The Rams finished in second with 179 points, followed by Air Force with 148.5 points. New Mexico finished fourth with 125.5 points, followed by Wyoming in fifth with 88 points. Utah rounded out the standings with 33 total points.

"To win this thing is really satisfying," BYU men's coach Mark Robison said. "I felt we were under some pressure after losing the indoor championship. With that kind of pressure, you're never sure how the kids will respond. It was a great team effort. Everyone worked hard and it paid off."

David Pendergrass was voted as the top freshman of the year after winning the high jump and finishing sixth in the triple jump.

Individual winners for the men include: David Pendergrass (high jump), Aron Szmuda (long jump), Daniel Arrhenius (discus), Matt Nielsen, Mao Tjiroze, Kish Beverly and Jeremy Stowell (4x400-meter relay).

In the final event of the day, the Cougars' title-run became official with a first-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The Cougars were in fourth place after the first lap, but senior Kish Beverly made up the difference and moved BYU into the lead with two laps remaining.
