Sprints, hurdles and throws to compete at USC

PROVO, Utah – After a week that included a new men’s 4x400-meter school record at the Texas Relays and three top-10 5,000-meter performances for the women at the Stanford Invitational, the Cougars’ sprints, hurdles and throws groups travel to USC's Ron & Sharlene Allice Trojan Invitational this weekend.

BYU men’s track and field is now No. 2 and the women No. 11 in the USTFCCCA’s latest national polls released Monday.

  • The only men's team member to compete Friday will be Harrison Gould in the discus throw at 1:30 p.m. PDT. On Saturday, the javelin throw begins at noon while the 4x400m relay concludes the day's events at 3:25 p.m.
  • The women will compete Saturday, as the 4x100m relay kicks off the day at 12:05 p.m. while the 4x400m relay at 3:15 p.m marks the final event.

Nationally-Ranked Cougars

BYU has 15 athletes ranked in the top-10 of their respective events nationally, including eight in the top five. Claire Seymour leads the charge at No. 1 in the 800-meters after blazing to a 2:01.96 victory last weekend at Stanford. Cierra Tidwell Allphin is second in the high jump with a clearance of 1.85m/6-0.75 to tie for fifth all-time at BYU. Kenneth Rooks is also second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after an event win nearly six seconds ahead of the runner-up, finishing with a 8:33.60 at Stanford Friday.

Ben Barton is fresh off a No. 6 all-time BYU performance in the decathlon at last week’s Texas Relays (7,699 points), propelling him to third among all NCAA DI decathletes. Dallin Shurts joins Barton at third in the discus throw after a 62.21m/204-1 heave Friday at Texas.

Cameron Bates, the Cougars’ all-time leader in the men’s javelin throw, is No. 4 for his 76.07m/249 mark set last week. Jenna Hutchins’ third all-time BYU performance in the 5,000-meter last week (15:35.73) brings her to fourth nationally. At No. 5, Joey Nokes rounds out the top five for the Cougars after his 13:32.01 performance at Stanford to earn his place at sixth all-time at BYU in the 5,000-meters.

Additional athletes who have achieved marks among the nation's top 10 include Caleb Witsken (No. 6, pole vault), Creed Thompson (No. 6, 5,000-meters), Brandon Garnica (No. 8, 5,000-meters), and men’s 4x400-meter relay squad members Trey Jackson, Eli Hazlett, Jace Jensen and Josh Taylor (No. 8).
