Track hosts second home indoor meet, two Cougars on Bowerman Watch List

PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s and women’s indoor track and field will return to action at its second home meet of the season on Thursday-Saturday, Jan. 13-15 at the Smith Fieldhouse.

Meet Information

• Visiting teams: Utah State, Dixie State and Pepperdine
• Thursday, Jan. 13: events begin at 1:45 p.m. MST with the women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon in the Smith Fieldhouse and throws at the Indoor Practice Facility.
• Friday, Jan. 14: events begin at 12:30 p.m. MST with jumps and the completion of the men's heptathlon.
• Saturday, Jan. 15: events begin at 10 a.m. MST with sprints, distance and relays.

• Limited spectator seating will be available on the west side of the Smith Fieldhouse. This is a non-ticketed event.

Rankings and Recognition

The USTFCCCA will release its preseason national rankings on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Both BYU men’s and women’s indoor teams finished the 2021 season ranked in the top-20.

BYU distance runner Courtney Wayment and pole vaulter Zach McWhorter were each one of 20 athletes named to the women's and men's Bowerman Award Preseason Watch Lists on Jan. 5-6. The Bowerman is collegiate Track and Field’s highest honor, bearing the same prestige of FBS college football’s Heisman Trophy or men’s basketball’s Wooden Award.

Wayment and McWhorter joined athletes from Oregon, LSU, Florida and Texas A&M, among others, on the watch lists.

Last time out…

The Cougars kicked off the 2021-22 home slate with the BYU December Invite on Dec. 9-10 and now enter a stretch with meets occurring every weekend for seven consecutive weeks.

Zach McWhorter stole the show among BYU men’s athletes at the December meet as he smashed his own school record with a pole vault clearance of 5.82m/19-1.25. McWhorter was subsequently named USTFCCCA Men’s National Athlete of the Week on Dec. 13

BYU men’s throwers also saw early season success at the December meet with Danny Bryant, Harrison Gould and Seth Knowlton each setting personal records in the shot put. Bryant took first place with Gould and Knowlton, both recently returned missionaries, close behind.

BYU women’s athletes were led by a school-record-breaking 60m performance from Jaslyn Gardner. The Enterprise, Utah native clocked a 7.27 to take first place, with teammate Adaobi Tabugbo setting a personal record of her own in second.

Taye Raymond, Layne Bolli, Cierra Tidwell-Allphin and Halley Folsom Walker also set personal bests in December.
