STANFORD, Calif. – Erica Birk-Jarvis broke her fourth school record in three months as BYU track and field competed at the Stanford Invitational, UVU Invite, Texas Relays and Mike Fanelli Track Classic on Friday.

Stanford Invitational

After breaking three school records during the 2019 indoor season, All-American Erica Birk-Jarvis didn’t break her stride in her outdoor debut and set a new BYU record in the 5000m with a time of 15:38.12. The previous record of 15:44.55 was set by Whitney McDonald in 2007.

All-American steeplechaser Matt Owens moved up to No. 5 all-time at BYU in the 3000m steeplechase after running a career-best 8:36.00. Owens’ time was good enough for second place in the men’s 3000m steeplechase invitational. Fellow All-American Clayson Shumway crossed the finish line just behind Owens for third place (8:38.62) while Jacob Heslington placed eighth overall (8:43.84).

All-American Whittni Orton had a strong debut in the women’s 1500m invitational after finishing with a time of 4:15.44. Teammates Lauren Ellsworth-Barnes and Anna Camp-Bennett finished 1-2 in their 1500m section with times of 4:18.95 and 4:20.95, respectively. In the women’s 3000m steeplechase invitational, Maddie Cannon ran a 10:12.37 to finish eighth place.

In the men’s 5000m invitational, All-American Connor McMillan competed in his first race of the outdoor season after finishing the indoor season with first-team All-America honors at the NCAA Championships. McMillan finished the 5000m race with a time of 13:50.37 and took eighth overall.

Due to late start times, the men’s and women’s 10,000m results will be included in the Saturday recap. However, results can be found before then on athletic.net.
